Degrees

The Department of Health Behavior offers a Bachelor Science in Health Education in two concentrations – Allied Health and Community Health – as well as a Health minor. Graduate degree programs include:

  • Master of Science in Health Education (online option available)
  • Master of Public Health with a concentration in health promotion and community health sciences
  • PhD in Health Education
  • Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) with a concentration in health promotion and community health sciences

In addition, a graduate certificate in Global Health is available to all graduate level students at the Texas A&M University College Station campus, not just those enrolled in the School of Public Health.

DEGREE DETAILS

Bachelor of Science in Health-Allied Health Track

The Bachelor of Science in Health-Allied Health Track gives students a strong background in health that serves them well if they choose to pursue additional schooling in an allied health area. This concentration provides an opportunity for students to take prerequisite courses for professional allied health schools as electives while receiving a background in the health education field. Students select electives from a list of prerequisites for specific professional schools such as nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, etc.

Bachelor of Science in Community Health

The Bachelor of Science in Community Health prepares and educates students to serve as community health educators and promoters in a variety or government and private health agencies, clinical settings, nonprofit organizations, and other community organizations. This program is unique in that it offers a wide range of approved electives permitting the student to develop a program according to his or her needs and interests. Each graduate will have knowledge enabling them to communicate health and health education needs, concerns and resources.

Master of Science in Health Education (MS)

This Master of Science in Health Education degree is designed to train and mentor the next generation of health education specialists that provide and manage programs through the provision of foundational and professional classroom education combined with real-world opportunities. Future health education specialists are prepared to work with individuals, families and communities to maximize and maintain healthy lifestyles. This degree program is offered in-person and online.

The program is grounded in the Responsibilities and Competencies for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) developed by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC). Students completing the master’s program are prepared to sit for the exam to be a Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES).

Master of Public Health (MPH)

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a professional master's degree designed to provide practical training in areas related to public health practice. Along with coursework in health promotion and community health sciences, the MPH exposes students to the other core public health areas (biostatistics, epidemiology, health policy and management, and environmental health).

PhD in Health Education

The PhD in Health Education prepares students to conduct research in basic and applied health education. A transdisciplinary approach is used to produce researchers and academicians who are trained to understand how one’s health and wellness is both positively and negatively influenced by one’s total environment from factors ranging from micro (interpersonal relationships, families) to macro (cultural, environmental, policies, and infrastructure). The goal is to train professionals who understand and consider the interaction between the individual, their respective state, and their social, structural land political environment.

Doctor of Public Health (DrPH)

The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) with a concentration health promotion and community health sciences is an advanced professional degree for those whose career goals are in the area of professional practice in public health, including current and potential leaders in public health practice. The DrPH prepares candidates for a career in high-level administration, teaching, or practice, where advance analytical and conceptual capabilities are requisite. This program is designed for the research-grounded practitioner; a graduate may be expected to fill instructional, supervisory, and administrative positions in which educational services are to be rendered.

Doctor of Medicine/Master of Public Health (MD+MPH)

The increasing complexities of health care delivery put a premium on professionals who understand and meet the demands required to deliver innovative, collaborative, and compassionate care. Administered by the Texas A&M College of Medicine, the MD Plus Program is committed to providing students the skills needed to take leadership roles in the healthcare industries. With multiple courses of study, the program is designed to meet students' varied interests.

Health Minor

The Health Minor is designed for students who want to develop knowledge in health-related topics and engage in courses which complement or enhance the myriad of degree programs available at Texas A&M University. The majority of courses are available online.

Graduate Certificate in Global Health

The Graduate Certificate in Global Health is an interdisciplinary certification that is available to all graduate students at Texas A&M University. Its purpose is to teach public health professionals about global perspectives on public health, encourage students to consider careers in a variety of settings around the world, and to promote research and innovation in addressing the myriad public health problems seen around the world.
