Coming from a large undergraduate degree program where the classes consisted of hundreds of students, the intimate community at the School of Public Health opened the door for me to participate in hands-on projects, attend professional networking conferences, and gain vital experience in my field.
I was able to take an Industrial Hygiene class that worked closely with the Environmental, Health and Safety Department at Texas A&M University. My group tested air quality and noise sampling in the Texas A&M School of Architecture building. I enjoyed this class because it exposed me to some of the procedures I would conduct in my desired field, and I was able to apply this knowledge during my internship with HollyFrontier.
In addition to hands-on experience in my class, I traveled to New Orleans for the Applied Ergonomics Conference with faculty. The conference provided multidisciplinary workshops and networking opportunities, an experience I would not have had without the School of Public Health.
A faculty member encouraged me to apply for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Grant, a trainee program that provides students with full financial assistance and encourages them to take part in research, join American Society of Safety Professionals, and attend conferences to learn and network with more people in this field. While the tuition assistance is a clear highlight of the award, the NIOSH grant allowed me to be an ambassador for the School of Public Health, which I enjoyed doing.
Currently, I am an EHS specialist with Cyrus One.
