Why did you choose Texas A&M’s School of Public Health?

Studying public health compliments my interest in eventually studying medicine. I had a close friend who started the program a year before me. She gave me knowledge and tips about the program and had great things to say about it.”

What has your experience been like in the program?

“Even better than I imagined. I did not have a full understanding of what public health was when I first began the program. I have come to appreciate its importance especially in population health and preventative health, which are two of my interests. I have also enjoyed learning about the other concentrations in the program as well.”

How do you feel this program has helped you prepare for a post-grad career?

“They have prepared me well. My favorite classes have been data management and the SAS programming class. Through the SAS programming class, we were able to obtain SAS certification. In my job search process, I have seen that knowing how to use SAS is an important skill to have.”

What level of support have you received while in your program?

“Since we have smaller classes, I am able to build relationships with my professors. Dr. Gang Han has been an excellent mentor, helping me explore career options and gain research experience.”

What do you think of the coursework?

“I like to apply the theories and skills I am learning to something tangible. I enjoyed the core courses we had in the first semester because it gave me an opportunity to learn more about the other concentrations in the college. At the same time, I was able to see how the concentrations overlap with each other in solving a public health problem or issue.”

How do you feel you have changed, personally or professionally since the beginning of the program?

“Professionally, I would still like to go to medical school but through this program, I have found excitement in pursuing a career in biostatistics. I enjoyed my coursework more than I had anticipated. Personally, I gained a lot of close friends and got to know my classmates really well.”

What advice would you give someone looking into A&M’s School of Public Health?

“First look deeply into all the concentrations the school has to offer in deciding which path to take and to also see if the curriculum and class sizes are a good match. Come into the program with an open mind.”

What are your plans for the future?

“My plan is to apply for a job in data analysis and management. Ideally, I would like to work for a pharmaceutical or a medical research team, especially if there is an opportunity to work one-on-one with patients.”

What has been your favorite thing about the program?

“I really enjoy the small size of the program. It has allowed me to get to know my professors and classmates really well. We are a tight knit group.”
