The School of Public Health (SPH) is eager to provide an activity friendly and accessible campus environment where people feel encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle and feel energized when on campus and coming to work, class, or to visit. We are invested in creating an indoor living room environment, and we have seen the increased use of this area by the community. The project implementation will include: butterfly and healing gardens, shaded seating areas, xeriscape landscaping, improved irrigation, walking trails using sustainable materials that will improve drainage, and construct a gathering place for class instruction and outreach/programming to showcase the impact of a sustainable outdoor living space.

A team of students, faculty and staff from their respective departments and schools provided their expertise for design and/or installation of the multi-function activity and environmentally friendly space. Our goals include:

  • Become a model among the campus community to show how a college can place priority on sustainability efforts in alignment with TAMU’s priorities while promoting our colleges’ mission and vision to be a leader in our discipline.
  • Create an interdisciplinary team by seeking expertise and support from multiple colleges and divisions on campus that will lead our infrastructure efforts.
  • Beautify our campus through modification of the physical environment and incorporation of Eco-friendly design practices.
  • Provide an outdoor living space that will allow our campus community to live beyond the walls of the classroom and offices and foster an interactivity community to facilitate health and wellness.
  • Provide functional classroom teaching at our school.
