Why did you choose Texas A&M’s School of Public Health?

“A&M was at the top of the list because of the inclusive and diverse first-generation student admits and because of the well-known Aggie Network. I did not know what major to pick on my college applications, but when the public health option came up, I was easily convinced. I did some more research about the Texas A&M School of Public Health and when I saw that this school was CEPH and CAHME accredited, I knew I wanted to be part of this community.

What has your experience been like in the program?

“Since I am a part of the 3+2 BSPH and MPH program, everything has felt so fast. With my first year all online because of the pandemic, getting on campus was crazy as I had never stepped foot on campus before my first day. The professors have always been so welcoming and supportive. This encouraged me to continue my academic studies and obtain a master’s degree. The undergraduate courses have also provided a direct link to the graduate courses so building that foundation allowed me to further excel in my courses.”

How do you feel this program has helped you prepare for a post-grad career?

“I’m not quite sure what my future holds yet, however, this program has guided me towards the right direction. The undergraduate courses were very interactive and provided examples of hard to grasp concepts that really made me connect big words to real-life situations. The MPH CORE provides real-life simulation experience in all concentrations, which allows students to realize their potential and learn more about what real-life public health is. The practicum that is integrated into our coursework is also something I look forward to. I think getting hands-on experience from individuals within the field will truly help me decide my plans for the future. Every course has felt like a small training for a career in public health.”

What level of support have you received while in your program?

“I have personally received support on every level. My peers have always been encouraging and checked-in on me during our big assignment deadlines. The second-year students have been the greatest mentors. The faculty support has also been incredible. Dr. Alva Ferdinand has always been encouraging and has been the greatest motivator.”

What do you think of the coursework?

“The coursework really allowed me to balance school, life and work. The undergraduate courses were structured in a way that allowed me to connect concepts in a more knowledgeable way. The CORE allowed me to meet and collaborate with individuals in different concentrations. This allowed us to integrate discussions about things that we would not necessarily think about in real life. The studio sessions held at the end of the week also build a more collaborative and open environment for questions and discussions.”

How do you feel you have changed, personally or professionally since the beginning of the program?

“I have always been told I’m a leader and in high-school, I was part of every organization I could join. This program specifically has shown me the importance of being a leader and being a good leader. The program also focuses on demonstrating the importance of followers. The coursework is very group-work oriented and therefore, it is important to be a good teammate. I was able to recognize the type of leader and follower I am, which allowed me to really excel in group situations.”

What advice would you give someone looking into A&M’s School of Public Health?

“I would encourage incoming and interested students to come in with an open mind. You may come in and have everything decided on what you want to do and that’s okay but be flexible. The opportunities here are endless and every conversation and moment is what you make out of it. I communicate with every TA, professor and even advisors at the career center because they really want the best for every student here at the School of Public Health.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I am still exploring my options post-graduation. I am currently deciding whether I want to go continue academia or enter the work field. I am also very open to every opportunity from now through graduation.”

What has been your favorite thing about the program?

“My favorite thing has been the close connections I was able to create with my cohort and the faculty. Everyone was always open to a conversation between classes and would even open up time to put me first. It is something I will definitely miss when I graduate.”
