Biography

Selina Stasi is from San Jose, California, has lived and attended universities in Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, Honolulu, HI, and College Station, TX. She identifies as a first-generation student, part Native Hawaiian, mother of two, and a community advocate. As an instructor of public health, she believes in student empowerment and ownership of their education, practice and service-based learning, and the integration of community partnerships in the classroom. Teaching content includes the determinants of health, population health promotion and strategies, and utilization of social and behavioral theory to assess health issues. While her past research has primarily consisted of the promotion of physical activity, her involvement with community development, mobilization, and advocacy spans 15+ years in the various locations she has lived. Her passions lie in both the physical activity content, and service to communities. Current work revolves around best practices for the integration of community engagement in research and teaching practices. She strives to obtain promotion in the next couple years and continue her teaching journey, exploring concepts of trauma as a determinant of health, healthy relationships, and promotion of community partnerships.

Awards, Recognition and Service

  • Dr. Stasi is a Faculty Fellow with the Center for Health and Nature
  • In 2019, she was granted article of the year with the American Journal of Health Promotion for her work surrounding access to physical activity
  • She teaches in the undergraduate program through Public Health Studies and within the SOPH Core for school wide MPH students
  • She has over 15 years of experience advocating for and with community-based organizations within Los Angeles, Miami, Honolulu, Pasadena (TX), Bryan-College Station, and the greater Houston area.
  • In addition to her work within academia and community outreach, she is a personal trainer, health, fitness, and CrossFit coach.
