Matthew Lee Smith is a Professor at the Texas A&M School of Public Health. He is a core faculty member of the Center for Community Health and Aging (CCHA) and Center for Health Equity and Evaluation Research (CHEER) and serves as Director of the Texas Research, Analytics, Innovations, and Research Lab (TRAIL). As an evaluator, interventionist, and methodologist, his research addresses health risk across the life-course, chronic disease management, and the dissemination of evidence-based solutions for older adults. Dr. Smith has devoted his career to creating synergistic partnerships and initiatives to encourage positive lifestyles and reduce preventable morbidity and mortality. His translational work bridges research and practice issues across the health care sector, aging services network, and public health system.
Smith’s research efforts have been funded by organizations including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Administration for Community Living (ACL), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Texas Alzheimer’s Research and Care Consortium (TARCC). He has authored about 400 publications, including over 340 peer-reviewed publications in scholarly journals. Dr. Smith’s research and evaluation foci surround the reach, adoption, implementation, effectiveness, and maintenance of evidence-based programs and policies. His efforts examine the feasibility of delivering evidence-based programs in diverse settings as well as their implementation with fidelity, scalability, and sustainability. His translational efforts have been applied to over 25 evidence-based programs including the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) programs, Otago Exercise Program, A Matter of Balance, Fit & Strong!, EnhanceFitness, Stepping On, and the STEADI toolkit. To complement these initiatives, Smith collaborates with numerous entities and national networks to develop and assess innovative interventions, solutions, and technologies to improve health and person-centered care.
