Sports for Health

Dr. SpenglerI am pleased to introduce the Sports for Health (SFH), housed within the Texas A&M School of Public Health’s Health Promotion Department. The SFH engages in outreach and research tied to the policies and environments that promote, provide and improve opportunities for leisure-time physical activity for everyone. In research, we seek evidence-based solutions that help sports and play-based initiatives serve the public interest, with a focus on the health needs of children and communities. The SFH is a proud supporter of #Girlsare, a nationwide campaign to empower girls and women to move and celebrate their athleticism. More about the #Girlsare campaign can be found at The SFH also supports and engages the World Fit Foundation and World Olympians Association by organizing weekly World Fit walks and wellness activities. The vision of the SFH closely aligns with the work of organizations such as Active Living Research, AHA’s Voices for Healthy Kids, the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the Aspen Institute’s Sport and Society Program. Importantly, the SFH was founded to provide student research, outreach, and job/practicum opportunities where students have an interest in applying public health to the fields of sport, recreation, fitness and wellness. We continue to seek new ideas and collaborations and would be pleased to hear your thoughts about potential new collaborations and project ideas.

All the best,

Dr. J.O. Spengler
